Thursday, June 18, 2009 6:00 PM Miramar Art Center Grand Opening Art Exhibition
IN THE CARIBBEAN: Contemporary Haitian Art and the Making of History CABA 2009 International Exhibition is dedicated to Haiti. The visual story of Caribbean contemporary art is one that has not been told yet, not because there is no storyteller to tell it but, because it only exists in fragments, each fragment asserting its own autonomous existence, removed from the context of mainstream history. Therefore, it is the story of artists who defy their "otherness" and enter the realm of 21st century aesthetics to lay their historic claim on it and challenge the framework that defines and polices its boundaries. 8:00 PM Miramar Art Cultural Center Ballroom CARIBBEAN-AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH AWARDS The 2009 Caribbean-American Heritage Month Awards Gala commemorates Caribbean-American achievements, honoring Caribbean men and women whose leadership in socio-economic, literary, visual and performing arts provided significant improvements in the lives of our citizens. We can say that more than a one-night affair, the Gala Night is a competitive and cultural show, the central axis and culminating event of a process in which Caribbean things of the mind are exposed through different ways. This allows members of the community to interact with peers, decisions makers and other people, receptively and productively. Therefore, more than an unforgettable moment of joy and entertainment, the Gala is a special event where we recognize that what we have in common is far greater than that which divides us. * * * * * Friday, June 19, 2009 7:00 PM Miramar Art Center CITY OF MIRAMAR NIGHT OF THE NOBEL LAUREATES Featuring THE HONORABLE DEREK WALCOTT Opening Reception The Annual Miramar Night of the Nobel Laureates launches the Caribbean-American Book and Art Fair and provides an internationally recognized forum for the transfer of knowledge between generations of citizens.
